Set the Clock โ Quarter Past and Quarter To
Once children are comfortable with o'clock and half past, the next big step is learning quarter past and quarter to. In this free clock activity, a time is shown in words or numbers, and your child moves the hour hand and the minute hand to set the clock correctly.
The minute hand jumps in 15-minute steps, so the quarter marks are easy to spot. Children slowly learn that the hour hand also moves a little between numbers. It is a calm, hands-on way to practise reading an analogue clock for kids aged 6 to 8.
How to play
- Read the time shown above the clock, for example quarter past three or 6:45.
- Move the long minute hand first. Point it to 3 for quarter past and to 9 for quarter to.
- Now move the short hour hand. Place it just after the hour for quarter past, and just before the next hour for quarter to.
- Check your clock and tap next to try a new time.
This activity helps children connect the words we say about time with what they see on an analogue clock. Your child practises identifying the hour hand and minute hand, counting in fifteen-minute steps, and understanding that quarter past comes after the hour while quarter to comes before the next hour. These skills support everyday independence, such as knowing when school starts or when a favourite routine begins. Try linking it to real life at home: ask your child to set a toy clock to snack time or bedtime. Short, regular practice of five to ten minutes works far better than one long session.
